LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The 2025 session of the Nevada Legislature is coming to an end.
FOX5 is tracking the progress of legislation that made it out of the session or failed.
Governor Joe Lombardo has signed a number of bills into law: Bills Signed by the Governor
Lombardo has ten days from the end of session to sign, veto or allow a law to pass, per state law. Lombardo is also releasing statements on various veto’s: Veto
Reba’s Law: late Monday night, a bill to strengthen animal cruelty laws finally passed the Senate and heads to the Governor’s Desk. The bill was inspired by Reba the Bulldog, who was left in a crate in the hot sun and died days after medical intervention.
EDUCATION BILLS PASSED
Education Funding (signed by the Governor): In late May, the Legislature passed $12.9 billion for education for Nevada schools, with a total cost per pupil of $13,889. Though lawmakers on both sides praised the effort, the Nevada State Education Association criticized the effort, noting that per pupil funding increased by $2 since last session.
Cell Phones in Schools (signed by the Governor): All school boards must craft policies for cell phones in schools, from policies in classrooms, penalties, to uses during emergencies.
CRIME BILLS PASSED
Wrong-way driving (signed by the Governor): Jaya’s law, named after a three-year-old killed by a wrong-way driver, outlines criminal penalties for offenders.
Copper wire theft: Penalizes possession of stolen “municipal grade” copper wire used for streetlights and public works.
Crimes against seniors: Enhances penalties for predatory crimes such as fraud, theft and home invasion.
VOTING BILLS PASSED
Guns and election sites: Guns are prohibited within or near election sites, with votes falling along party lines.
HOUSING AND RENT BILLS PASSED
Rent caps for seniors: A pilot program would cap rent for seniors and those with disabilities for one year.
“Junk” Fees: Landlords must disclose all monthly fees to renters prior to tenants signing a lease.
MEDICAL AND HEALTH BILLS PASSED
Nurses and staffing: Mandates staffing ratios of patients assigned to each nurse in various healthcare settings.
