LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As millions of Americans are looking for work or opportunities to change careers, there’s efforts to help more women train to enter the automotive industry.
There will be 70,000 openings for automotive technicians and mechanics by 2034, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics; less than 2% of the current workforce are women. As longtime workers retire, there are efforts to replenish the workforce.
“Across the country, there is a shortage and a big gap in the workforce right now. You’re not really going to fill that workforce if you only focus on half of the population, so we really encourage women to consider careers in the automotive industry or in trades in general,” said Rose White, campus president of United Education Institute in Las Vegas.
The automotive technician program lasts nine months, with school in the lab at least two days a week.
FOX5 was there in the automotive lab, as a diverse group of students– men and women– worked to learn the skills to become a certified automotive technician. Companies and shops will call the campus, looking for students to hire.
“There’s a variety of opportunities. You can go into the service side, into the management side, administrative. You can break into some of the fun things like we have in Las Vegas with F1 racing,” White tells FOX5.
