LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas youth soccer team is heartbroken after a crash critically injured a young player while traveling to an out-of-state tournament.
Nevada Rush Soccer Club’s B2010 Select Team was traveling to Boise, Idaho in a sprinter van for their Regional Championship Tournament when the crash occurred.
It happened Thursday evening when the van’s rear driver side tire blew out, according to Elmore County Sheriff’s Office officials who responded to the crash.
Alonso, a 15-year-old player on the team, was critically injured and airlifted to a Boise-area hospital.
Out of respect for Alonso and his family, FOX5 is not going into detail on his condition. Over the weekend, Nevada Rush shared on their social media account that Alonso is “showing positive signs of recovery, but still has a long way to go.”
Jaime Serrano, who was in the van with his own son during the crash, said Alonso is known for his smile and positivity. He has a knack for soccer, too.
“Our first reaction to Alonso was what a talent, a huge talent, a great defender, and we were really excited to have him on board,” Serrano said.
Serrano said the crash happened when the team was only about one hour away from their hotel in Boise.
He said Alonso was on his way to represent Las Vegas proudly in the tournament. Now, he and his family are in need of support from the community.
“This could have been anyone. It could have been your family member, your friend,” Serrano said. “He’s one of Vegas’ own and we hope that Vegas reaches out and supports him as their own.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Alonso and his family.
In a social media post, Nevada Rush shared that the other players and coaches on board “suffered only minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.”
