LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Meta now has more than a billion users around the world. That makes social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram particularly popular with cybercriminals looking to make new “friends.”

If you’ve ever wondered who’s checking out your profile, you’re not alone. Scammers try to capitalize on that curiosity. You’ll see an ad, or get an email or direct message, promising to let you track who visits your page or profile. All you have to do is click a link, and all will be revealed. But it won’t, because the link is bogus, and all you’re doing is giving the criminals access to your social media accounts.

Sidestepping this type of scam is easy. Never click on links, attachments, or QR codes sent to you from unfamiliar sources. Be suspicious of unsolicited email or direct messages from people you don’t know. Delete — don’t engage. And, it’s a good idea to have unique passwords for each of your social media accounts. Content sharing is good — password sharing is not!
