LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Data breaches happen, and accounts get hacked. So, what do you do if you find yourself facing this increasingly common type of cybercrime?
FOX5 Investigates has some answers.
The Federal Trade Commission says last year, an estimated 18 million Americans fell victim to identity theft. If you’re unfortunate enough to find yourself among them, fast action is key.
First, report the incident to the FTC and your local police. Next, contact your bank to take steps to secure your accounts. You should also consider putting a freeze on your credit reports to prevent unauthorized access. While you’re at it, add a fraud alert to your credit reports as well.
After that’s done, you’ll want to closely monitor all of your accounts for suspicious activity. Also, keep a close eye on your credit reports and watch for new accounts you didn’t open, or charges you didn’t make.
