LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A teenager died after someone fired shots late Friday night during the “First Friday” event in the Las Vegas Arts District. The teen has been identified as 15-year-old Carth Onasi Jacobs-Rodgers.
Metro Police say the shooting started after a fight broke out near South Main and West Charleston Boulevard. Two other people who were shot are expected to be okay. Metro Police have not released any more information on who the alleged shooter is.
The shooting happened during the October First Friday event, a monthly gathering in the Arts District that recognizes local artists and vendors.
Arts district reaction
Tony Chavez, a member of the 18B Arts District HOA board, said, “My initial reaction to it was it was heart breaking.”
Chavez said there was already a large security presence at the event. “Oh yea. Increased security, tons of marshals and we had drones in the area, that’s why Metro was on it,” Chavez said.
Video showed people running into a local business after shots were fired.
Chavez said, “All of us do not take this lightly.”
Possible changes
Asked whether turning the event into a 21-and-over event would help, Chavez said, “I can see us at this point possibly put more of a age limit on it probably, so if we could add more metal detectors, exact entry points.”
Artist Robin Slonina said she was near the area of the shooting. “Any near miss like that is pretty crazy,” Slonina said.
Slonina said she still wants the event to remain open to teens. “A bunch of teens stop by when I live paint and ask all these questions,” Slonina said. “Part of what is so wonderful about First Friday, it gives teenagers exposure to the works.”
Members of the Arts District say events like First Friday help support local businesses and say it is important they continue to have that support.
