FOX5 received an updated statement from the ranch. They say Ozzie may have been startled overnight by a possible insect bite or something on the ground.
They say Ozzie started to rise faster than usual. Ozzie fell into a “splay” position. This is when an animal’s legs go out from under them unnaturally.
The ranch says Ozzie’s injuries were life-threatening. He passed away because of his leg injury and strain of trying to get up.
Animal control did respond and said there were no violations.
The ranch says they are partnering with Growing Resilience for Aquarium and Zoo employees for resources and counseling for the care team.
“Ozzie’s legacy will forever remain in our hearts, and we appreciate the outpouring of sympathy from our community,” the ranch said. “Together, we honor his memory and continue our mission to care for and protect the remarkable animals at the Lion Habitat Ranch.”
The ranch says they will be open this weekend to recognize World Lion Day.
