LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is sharing new details about the knife-wielding suspect shot by officers last week.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, LVMPD officers were conducting an unrelated person stop when an unknown suspect exited a vehicle and approached with a knife.
In a press conference on Monday, LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser identified the suspect as 57-year-old Shae Houston Courtroul.
Courtroul could be seen on body-camera footage wearing a hospital gown and holding a black folding knife. Assistant Sheriff Prosser added that Courtroul had checked into a hospital earlier in the day, but would walk out before receiving treatment.
Officers would give Courtroul several verbal commands to drop the weapon, which police say he ignored.
The four officers at the scene would fire at Courtroul a combined total of 17 times. Those officers were identified as officers Jeremy Johnson, 32; Jacobo Solis, 22; Andrew Collins,39; and Dominick Nelson, 26. All were assigned to the Tourist Safety Division with the Convention Center Area Command.
Additionally, all were placed on administrative leave pending a review of the incident.
Courtroul is currently receiving treatment at Sunrise Hospital for his injuries. He is also facing two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting arrest with a dangerous weapon.
He is due back in court on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
