LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Growing pains in Henderson as Reimagine Boulder Highway, a multi-year, multi-million dollar project, is now well underway.

After many complaints from FOX5 viewers about slow commutes due to the construction, we went for a ride to see the issues firsthand.

“So much more traffic it is unbelievable,” contended Larry Pearo standing at the corner of Boulder Highway and Sunset Road Tuesday afternoon.

Cars lined Sunset Road behind him during the afternoon commute waiting to turn onto or cross Boulder Highway, traffic cones lining the intersection in every direction.

Before speaking with FOX5, Pearo waited to cross the busy intersection as some cars had to wait multiple light cycles to get through. It is part of Pearo’s daily commute and he’s got used to lengthy waits.

“It seemed like a really longtime?,” questioned FOX5’s Kim Passoth.

“About five minutes or so and it happens all the time,” Pearo revealed.

According to the Reimagine Boulder Highway webpage, the speed limit for Boulder Highway through Henderson has been dropped to 35 miles per hour during the construction and will stay that way after the project is complete.

Signs now warn drivers to expect delays. The slow drive through the Reimagine Boulder Highway Project with some areas down to just one lane where crews don’t appear to be working, has a lot of people calling the FOX5 newsroom.

“Why do you have all the cones on Boulder Highway if you’re not working in the middle? Take the cones down,” demanded on caller.

“The traffic is backed up and takes another half hour to an hour to get to where you’re going. It’s unbelievable,” stated another caller.

For people who walk Boulder Highway everyday like Augustus who we met waiting for the bus, the construction is a headache for now.

“I am going to be honest, I don’t feel safe just because everything is so crowded,” Augustus described gesturing to the orange cones lining the street.

However, Augustus believes with an area blocked off for pedestrians in the new design, improved safety in the long run will make it worth it.

“Yeah, it is worth it…You know you don’t want to lose somebody’s life,” Augustus argued.

The City of Henderson posted this update on the Reimagine Boulder Highway project webpage after complaints about long waits at intersections:

The City of Henderson is actively working on signal timing in the Boulder Highway corridor to improve commute times as much as possible. Check out the free Waze app to navigate construction impacts and find the best route to your destination.

The City of Henderson says Reimagine Boulder Highway is a historic roadway project that aims to make a generational impact by reshaping the future and safety of one of Nevada’s oldest thoroughfares, Boulder Highway. The 7.5-mile construction project, designed with community input, will bring several vital roadway improvements, such as center-running transit lanes with enhanced passenger shelters, upgraded storm drain system, new traffic signals, improved lighting, elevated buffered bike lanes, landscape treatments, and more.
