LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Copper wire thieves are leaving some neighbors in the dark in Summerlin.
FOX5 has been covering outages in this area for over a month, and today – we learned there have been some improvements.
There’s a cluster of outages between Hualapai Way and Town Center Drive from east to west, and Sahara Avenue to the north and Desert Inn Road to the south.
County workers are desperately trying to keep up with repairs.
In the month since FOX5 has reported on the issue, numbers have only gotten worse.
Take it from Esther Astolfi. She’s lived in the area for close to 30 years. “I don’t like it. It’s not safe,” Astolfi said.
She’s not only worried about the safety of her dog, but other little ones.
“The kids that are riding the skateboards, all of it, and just people speeding through here,” Astolfi said.
When asked if drivers cannot see children at crosswalks, she says you can’t.
But the county can clearly see it has a problem on its hands.
The Public Works Department currently has a backlog of about 300 wire theft locations in need of repair.
That’s up from about 200 locations in October, and we’re told repairs are taking several months because there are so many streetlights out.
County officials call it a costly and frustrating problem.
The Public Works Department says nearly one million feet of wiring has been stolen since 2022, that’s just over half the distance from the Vegas Valley to Phoenix.
But back here at home, Astolfi is hopeful fixes will come soon.
“I think, other than that, it’s a great neighborhood. It’s a great park, and let’s make it safe for everyone,” Astolfi said.
The Public Works Department was in the area Tuesday making repairs, but county leaders didn’t give FOX5 a timeline on when this area will see fixes, just saying repairs are taking several months.
If you have an issue on your street, they recommend filing a report on the FixIt Clark County app.
