LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV and UNR graduate students have announced plans to unionize.
The students will be represented by the Nevada Graduate Student Workers-United Auto Workers. In a letter delivered to the Nevada System of Higher Education, the union stated that a supermajority of students signed union authorization cards for the NGSW-UAW.
“We are proud to do essential work that drives the academic mission of the Nevada System of Higher Education,” the letter reads. “But despite our vital contributions, we do not have a voice in determining our pay, benefits, workplace protections, and other working conditions.”
The letter continued by asking NSHE to recognize the union and meet for its first collective bargaining session.
The union further highlighted the issues at hand by pointing to a recent survey distributed across NSHE, which found that 1 in 4 GAs have “experienced or witnessed discrimination in the workplace.
Additionally, 1 in 4 GAs have “experienced or witnessed retaliation for raising workplace issues.”
