LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A trailer carrying chickpeas burned in Death Valley National Park.
According to park officials, around 5:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer carrying over 40 thousand pounds of dried chickpeas caught fire on Nov. 21.
NPS reported the vehicles breaks overheated as they were traveling through Daylight Pass and Mud Canyon Road. This area is reportedly closed to commercials trucks.
The truck pulled over and bursted into flames.
Multiple agencies responded, including Death Valley National Park, Caltrans, and California Highway Patrol.
Officials say their first concern is ensuring hazardous material burning will not impact the National Park. In this case park leaders were not concerned about the chickpeas.
“When a commercial truck has a wreck or catches on fire, we worry about what it will release into the park,” said Superintendent Mike Reynolds. “However, there’s very little chance that stray chickpeas not cleaned up will become invasive species in the driest place in North America.”
Park officials reported Two Star Towing cleared up the wreckage and cleaned up the chickpea remnants.
