NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Hundreds of people across the valley came together Thursday night to honor the life of a North Las Vegas Police Officer killed in the line of duty.
Officer Jason Roscow was killed in a shootout near Lone Mountain Road and Camino Al Norte on Tuesday.
The Injured Police Officers Fund hosted a candlelight vigil at Liberty Park outside North Las Vegas City Hall.
The FOX5 crew saw tears and a lot of hugging from police officers of various departments, all coming together to honor the life of fallen officer.
“At this time, if you have a candle, please hold it up high,” as someone took the microphone and addressed the crowd. “Hold them up high for Jason!”
Supporters like Katie O’Rourke followed the commands.
She’s a teacher, but her family has ties to law enforcement.
Her brother served in the same department as Roscow, and she tells us how he’s coping.
“I think as good as he can be doing, you know, it’s one day at a time, but it definitely affects him,” O’Rourke said. “He comes out to protect people and keep people safe, not to lose one of his friends and one of his family members.”
The North Las Vegas Police Department posted some family photos, if you will, explaining on Facebook, just hours before Officer Jason Roscow lost his life in the line of duty, he shared a good laugh with his team in an early morning photo session.
The team spirit was felt with another group, tow truck drivers, like Dan Miller who says it’s an honor to do a procession.
“These officers, they go out of their way to protect us tow operators,” Miller said. “They put their cars in the way themselves in the way, and I want to show my respect to them for all the help they do for us.”
The 46-year-old officer has been with the North Las Vegas Police Department for 17 years. He leaves behind two young sons, Graysen (9) and Andrew (4).
Fellow officer, Alexander Cuevas feels for the family and says the department will never be the same.
“Jason was just a good guy. He was everyone’s friend on the department, and I’m so sad to see him go because it’ll hurt the department,” Officer Cuevas said.
A local funeral service for Officer Roscow will be held at Central Church. Officer Roscow will be laid to rest in his hometown of Prairie du Rocher, Illinois.
The Injured Police Officers Fund is holding a fundraiser for Officer Roscow on Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Nevada Coin Mart. All proceeds will go to support his family.
