LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The City of Las Vegas will implement a hiring freeze through multiple departments after settling the Badlands legal battle.
Deputy City Manager Sabra Newby made the announcement to the Nevada Assembly Committee of Government Affairs Thursday.
The Badlands Golf Club is at Alta and Rampart in Las Vegas. In 2015, a developer bought the land to build homes. and the city granted the land entitlements but didn’t approve the zoning.
The developer filed four different lawsuits claiming the City’s inaction made the land useless. The courts agree. The City settled last year.
Newby said the City is set to pay $250 million but will need to save money and cut costs through a hiring freeze.
“As folks leave we identify whether or not those positions should be filled,” Newby told the Committee. “Public safety is not in that freeze. It is a priority for us that public safety positions are not being frozen. But all other positions are being scrutinized heavily and most likely going to be frozen.”
The City has close to 3,900 employees. More than 1,500 of them are public safety employees. The freeze is expected to last two years.
