LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A second officer was identified in a North Las Vegas police shooting that killed an officer and the suspect.

The North Las Vegas Police Department says Luis Macias-Venegas was another officer involved in the shooting. Tuesday, officer Jason Roscow was shot by the suspect and died the same day.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Alexander Andre Mathis.

Police said the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon in the area of Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road. Officers responded to a subject who pointed a firearm at someone else.

When officers arrived, they tried to contact the suspect, but police said he ignored commands and fled.

An officer would find the suspect armed. They gave commands to show his hands, but the suspect ignored them again and started to approach officers.

Gunfire was exchanged. Both officer Roscow and Mathis died at UMC.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas’ finest,” said Chief of Police Jacqueline Gravatt. “Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends and his brotherhood in blue.”

This is the first NLVPD officer-involved shooting of 2025. Per NLVPD policy, the identity of the officers involved will be released after 72 hours.
