LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Clark County says it has not issued any violations to scrap metal businesses since the county’s copper wire theft prevention ordinance.
It went into effect in November.
The ordinance makes it tougher for thieves to sell stolen copper by banning scrap metal locations from purchasing “7 strand” copper from anyone without proper documentation. Seven strand copper is typically used by municipalities for public works.
It also bans walk-up sales and requires vehicle transport of scrap metal.
In December, Clark County’s Department of Business License agents conducted inspections of all scrap metal locations in unincorporated Clark County.
The county says, during the unannounced inspections, zero violations were noted.
Clark County agents can give out misdemeanor citations to businesses if they find a violation during an inspection. The county says any criminal activity from potential sellers wire would require the involvement of Metro Police.
The county says they plan to continue unannounced inspections “routinely” but there is no set schedule yet. They will also follow up on complaints from the community, which can be made via FixIt Clark County.
