LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Lee Canyon Ski Resort says this March has been a miracle for their ski season — with 50 inches of snowfall over the last two weeks and thousands of visitors heading to the mountain to shred that fresh powder.
“It’s nice when Mother Nature helps out, and it’s really nice when it happens early in the season, but I will gladly take it in March over nothing at all,” said Lee Canyon Marketing Coordinator Johnny DeGeorge.
March brought enough snow to open all five chairlifts and all 29 ski trails at Lee Canyon for the first time all season.
“In terms of terrain, being 100% open, March has been the first month,” said DeGeorge. “It came quick, and it came hard, and it’s on now, so definitely come up and have some fun with us.”
On Saturday, Lee Canyon hosted a youth competition, with some young talent hitting the slopes.
“Kind of a slope style format, so we had two different rails, followed by a jump. We had kids as young as age 4 or 5 up to 16,” said DeGeorge. “We saw a bunch of cool tricks. One kid did a backflip, which was pretty cool.”
And it’s not just visitors from Vegas taking advantage of the powder at lee canyon.
“A lot of folks that come to visit Vegas from even different countries come up and ski, and of course our neighboring states. We’ve had some California, Utah visitors,” said DeGeorge. “This month has turned us around, and our snow totals have actually been pretty respectable.”
If you’re planning a trip up to Lee Canyon during this busy late ski season, be prepared for crowds on the mountain and traffic on the roads.
“If you’re going to come up on a weekend after a storm, expect delays, be patient. It’s always great to leave either really early or maybe even come midday,” said DeGeorge.
Lee Canyon has gotten four inches of fresh snow in the last 48 hours, bringing the season total to 103 inches.
This Saturday, Lee Canyon will host another competition with live music and prizes. It’s a head-to-head slalom race with free entry, open to all ages.
