LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Still no sign of Mojave Max our Desert Tortoises and weather prognosticator like Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog everyone turns to in early February to see if we get an early spring.
Mojave Max is still in Brumation (a reptiles hibernation) at the Springs Preserve.
The last two years Max has come out of his burrow on just a day apart in April.
The earliest day he ever surfaced is February 14th back in 2005.
Right now he’s in the deepest burrow at the Springs Preserve sharing it with two other tortoises.
Senior Zoologist Katrina Smith expects him to climb out into the sunshine at some point over the next three weeks,
Mojave Max is the official mascot of the Clark County Desert Conservation Program.
Clark County is hosting the annual Mojave Max Emergence Contest, where those who guess as closest to the exact day he emerges will win.
