LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A local Marine Corps Veteran is set to take part in a special experience this weekend.
Charles Hensel will embark on a journey of overcoming obstacles as a disabled veteran.
Hesel will participate in the 39th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Aspen, Colorado. And he is not the only one representing Nevada. Hensel will be accompanied by Las Vegas veteran Harold Yago.
The pair will be surrounded by 400 other disabled veterans from across the country. The group will take on mountain snow activities like skiing and snowmobiling.
Hensel says taking part is not about competition, but rather comradery and a chance to prove that despite a disability, he can still be active.
“we don’t have to go out there and prove that we’re #1 like I feel I have to do, but that’s just not who I am anymore. I want to go out there and just enjoy myself and be able to do some of the stuff that I used to do,” Charles Hensel shared.
The winter sports clinic is a five-day event co-sponsored by the V.A. and D.A.V.
Hensel says he’s also participated in a summer sports clinic in California.
