LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The death of Pope Francis left many in mourning around the world, including in Las Vegas.
People gathered at the Guardian Angel Cathedral Monday, many of them wiped tears away and prayed in silence.
At the cathedral, the bells rang but for many the sound felt different. News of Pope Francis’ passing brought tears, memories and a deep sense of loss.
Carmen Shacon was one of the first to arrive after hearing the news.
“He did so many good things, he was outspoken. He spoke for the poor, and he loved people, and I love that he was so outspoken – I feel sad.” Shacon said.
She explained Pope Francis always stood for those who often feel forgotten.
“During his time he always spoke for the poor, for immigrants.. Its so painful,” Shacon said in Spanish.
In May of 2023, Pope Francis elevated the Diocese of Las Vegas to archdiocese – a move that recognized the growth of the local Catholic community. Archbishop of Las Vegas George Leo Thomas said he will always cherish the time he spent with Pope Francis.
“The time we spent with him in that three hours to hear him speak with such tenderness for the immigrant and the poor. I thought it was one of the most moving meetings I’ve ever had in my life,” said Archbishop Thomas.
Inside the cathedral, Auxiliary Bishop Gregory Gordon offered words of comfort and a reminder of the pope’s final message.
“Pope Francis showed that in his life in his pontificate and even in his last words before his death so may he rest in the peace of the risen Christ, and I thank you for your praying for him.” expressed Archbishop Thomas.
For those who attended mass Monday, it was a moment to pray and reflect, and for some, it brought mixed feelings
“We’re a little happy because he stopped suffering but at the same time, we are sad because we were so happy with him as our pope,” shared Maria Luisa Martinez.
A memorial mass is being planned here in Las Vegas, but for many the prayers have already begun.
“I pray for his departed soul, may he rest in eternal peace, and I also I pray for the next. That he will be whoever he will be to help us to come close to know Jesus, to the love for the poor, the love of all those who are suffering.” said one Las Vegas local.
The Archdiocese of Las Vegas say they will be posting updates on memorial dates and times on their website.
