LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Pop-ups can pose problems, especially if they alert you to security issues with your computer.
The Federal Trade Commission says cybercriminals are creating pop-ups that impersonate Microsoft, Apple, or Geek Squad. They’ll warn of a security issue, and urge you to call a number of click a link to access tech support.
But — the only security issue you truly face comes with the pop-up. It could bring you malware, bogus charges, or lead to identity theft.
The FTC says real tech companies will never ask you to call them. Before you click that link, update your security software and run a scam to determine if the threat is real.
If you do need help with a tech issue, turn to a reputable company. Do your homework, check reviews and ratings. Retailers typically offer tech support as well. You can also find support online, but only book appointments through an official, verified website.
