Suspect sentenced for stabbing off-duty officer on Las Vegas Strip bridge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The man accused of stabbing an off-duty officer on a Las Vegas Strip pedestrian bridge in 2022 has been sentenced to life in prison.

A judge sentenced Freddy Allen, 61, to life in prison with parole eligibility in 12 years for the murder of Tyler Steffins, an off-duty officer with the Edmonds Police Department in Washington.

The incident occurred on a pedestrian bridge between MGM Grand and New York-New York. Arriving officers observed Allen holding a knife, and attempting to flee the area.

Detectives also noted he was seen throwing the knife in the Statue of Liberty fountain before being taken into custody.

According to an arrest report, Allen told officers that Steffins grabbed another person’s dog’s face “aggressively,” and he didn’t like it.

Allen claimed Steffins approached the dog on two separate days. On the second approach, an argument ensued, and a witness observed Allen possibly pushing Steffins.

The witness told officers Steffins said, “I think he just stabbed me,” before collapsing. He later died at UMC.

Edmonds Police Department stated in a post honoring Steffins, “Tyler was a valued member of our police family whose infectious smile and contagious laugh endeared him to his peers. We will miss him terribly, but cherish the times we had with him. We remain committed to providing quality service to our community even during the most trying of times.”

Steffins is survived by his wife and two young children, the department said.
