LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s a proud day for dozens of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department recruits – but for one new officer, the badge carries extra meaning.

Seth Hurst made a promise when he was just a child.

“I want to be a policeman,” said Hurst in a video posted by LVMPD. Hurst was a child at the time of the recording of the vide. On Wednesday, his biggest wish came true.

Hurst was one of 49 new graduates being sworn into the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Wednesday.

“It’s always been one of those things I’ve wanted to do, there’s been a long path getting here,” Hurst said.

The path was far from easy for Hurst. When he was 15 years old, a tragic accident made him wonder whether his dream would come true.

“I was paralyzed a couple years ago from a snowboarding accident, I had to learn how to walk,” he said.

It was an emotional day for Hurst and his family. His mother explained when her son says he’s going to do something, he always follows through.

“I can’t put to words how proud I am of him, so super proud of him and all of his fellow graduates,” said his mother, Anna Hurst.

Anna said today felt surreal, and the start of a new chapter that almost never happened.

“There was a time when he thought he wouldn’t walk, but he conquered all odds and became a personal trainer and then EMT, and we knew he was always destined for great things,” she said.

Officer Hurst starts field training on Tuesday – and said he’s ready to get out there and help the community.
