LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As the cost of living continues to climb, many families are struggling to keep up.

In Latino households, mothers are often the ones carrying that weight.

“They’re the pillars in our community. They’re holding it down, making those hard financial decisions,” said Nevada program manager of Somos Votantes, Angel Lazcano.

At the Querida Madre community event Wednesday, Latina moms connected to resources that many say they’ve never had access to. This includes business programs and licensing help through the Las Vegas Business Incubator.

“If they’re interested in starting a business, I’ve heard time and time again, it’s hard maneuvering that process for upcoming entrepreneurs or first generation that don’t have connections to resources,” Lazcano said.

Lazcano explained they’re responding directly to concerns heard across Latino neighborhoods in Las Vegas.

“Our latest polls show that 67% of Latinos feel like the economy in general is not doing that well off. It’s not doing the best for them, and then 14% that feel that they themselves don’t feel financially stable,” Lazcano said.

Somos Votantes events are designed to meet families where they are with what they need.

“Rising rents, growing grocery bills and the cost of utilities and everything like that, there’s just that apparent need. We want to be there for the community to help. Help them out any way we can.”

Organizers said this is just one of several events they have planned to support families in the Las Vegas community – with more resource driven gatherings expected later this year. To learn more about the organization, visit the Somos Votantes website.
