LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas security expert urges all businesses to train their workers for all emergencies in light of the recent mass shooting at a local gym.

FOX5 recently obtained the 911 calls for the May 16 shooting at the LVAC. Police sources told FOX5 that day, the shooting was not an “active shooter” situation, though 911 callers and initial reports indicated a possible “active shooter.” The gunman’s motive is still undetermined.

Even if a gunman targets a person in a business, any place with innocent bystanders can become “soft target,” according to security consultant Tommy Burns of Burns & Associates.

“Employees need to be trained: how to evacuate people. What to do in a crisis. It’s always the first thing to call 911. Secondly, evacuate, and evacuate people or get people down,” Burns said.

Though businesses can hire private and armed security, Burns said the costs are unsustainable for many small companies or facilities.

Public places like churches may have designated armed personnel who can legally carry weapons, Burns said.

Though a place may be a designated “gun free zone,” Burns said that label is no guarantee to keep weapons out.

“[There are] 400 to 500 million guns in civilian hands. The ‘gun free zone’- It’s a nice sign. In reality, it doesn’t mean anything. People have to be to watch out for their own safety,” Burns said.

Burns urges any person to constantly practice “situational awareness”: look for exits and emergency exits. Call 911 if someone looks or seems suspicious.
