LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – With immigration fears on the rise, many families in Las Vegas are struggling with anxiety, fear – and nowhere to turn. But a Las Vegas Valley intern therapist is teaming up with others to offer free mental health support to the immigrant community.
For many immigrants in Las Vegas, fear has become a daily burden. Fear of family separation, deportation and the unknown.
“I came into this field because I genuinely wanted to help my community, my Hispanic community,” said licensed marriage and family therapist intern, Mimi Samayoa.
Samayoa has partnered with over 10 valley therapists to provide free therapy to immigrant families in Las Vegas, no questions asked.
“Therapy with me or with any of the therapists that I recommended, it is a safe place,” she said. “We’re not here to report anything to ICE, we’re not here to report anything to the police.”
Samayoa explained it’s not just the undocumented community being impacted.
“I’ve also been talking to some of my first-generation American clients where they feel as though the fear of the thought of their parents not coming home and learning how to process that.”
In many immigrant homes, seeking therapy comes with two barriers – the fear of being targeted and the stigma within the Latino culture.
“It’s not just crazy people that are coming to therapy, it’s people that are going through adjustments, going through a breakup, going through a new accomplishment,” Samayoa said.
