LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A community meeting intended to address the recent closure of Broadacres Marketplace was cancelled at the last-minute Tuesday, leaving many vendors frustrated and demanding answers.

Vendors and residents – all hoping to find out what comes next for Broadacres Marketplace showed up to Centro Cristiano El Shaddai Tuesday – only to find the event canceled.

The meeting had been promoted to the community to discuss the sudden closure of Broadacres – a place many depend on for income.

“We are so worried about this, we have a lot of bills to pay, including for our house and food and all those things,” said Santos Curi, one of the vendors who showed up to the church.

Pastor Marko Gamboa didn’t want to be on camera but told FOX 5 Congressman Steven Horsford’s office canceled the public event and instead invited him to a private meeting – something he declined. He explained this was supposed to be conversation for the entire community- not just behind closed doors.

“And today was canceled and we need to know exactly why because we need all the information to see what we can do,” said another vendor, Maria De La Luz Flores.

Congressman Horsford’s office told FOX 5 the meeting was always intended to be private – giving participants a chance to speak freely.

“We are completely and totally worried, three weeks with no work. Three weeks with no income,” said vendor Yolanda Rivera.

A spokesperson for Horsford’s office said the goal was always “to gather community input and work with stakeholders to hopefully see Broadacres reopen, without vendors or shoppers fearing for their wellbeing.”

But for the vendors who showed up Tuesday, the disappointment is still fresh.

“We had high hopes, we came with a lot of enthusiasm to know what we could expect but now I’m leaving frustrated,” said De La Luz Lopez.

And for many the questions about their future remain unanswered.

“Now we don’t know anything, we don’t have anything, if they’re going to open soon – in one month in two months, we don’t know anything,” Curi said.

A spokesperson for Horsford’s office added the congressman is also beginning plans for a public-facing community-wide event as well.
