LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A recent fire at a convenience store off Boulder Highway and Indios Avenue has reignited talks about the homeless population in the area.

Ryan Strenkowski saw the fire with his own eyes on Saturday, telling FOX5 he believes it was tied to a homeless conflict.

“They were fighting Friday night pretty heavily through the night and had their own issues and I’m not sure why they started a fire. It really wasn’t that cold,” Strenkowski said.

“All of a sudden, just a little bit of smoke started coming and it just got away them,” he added.

Strenkowski wasn’t the only one to way in on the incident.

Frank Campagne spoke to FOX 5 on Saturday at the scene as fire crews were putting out the fire.

He expressed his frustrations about the ongoing unhoused issues in his neighborhood.

“They kick them out. Three weeks later or a month later they come back and then the fire department has to show up,” Campagne said.

“Nowadays our stores get shut down early because all the homeless people are bothering people.”

The issue has grown to the point that Campagne is nervous living in the area he’s called home for years.

“What are we supposed to do. We’re all seniors. We have a lot of seniors that live over here. We’re stuck with this,” Campagne said.

Meanwhile, Strenkowski acknowledged the “catch 22″ of the homelessness situation, not wanting to have to deal with it but also not wishing it on the people who are unhoused.

“You just don’t like to see it either way. You don’t want to see the homeless problem and you don’t want them near your businesses or where you’re staying, but obviously they need a place to go to as well,” Strenkowski said.

FOX5 has reached out to Clark County Fire for official details on Saturday’s fire. Those updates will be provided as they come in.
