LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Next week, Clark County School District students will head back to class for their first full academic year with a new leader at the helm.
Jhone Ebert stepped into the role as CCSD’s superintendent in April. Ahead of the 2025-2026 school year, FOX5 asked Ebert what she thinks the biggest challenge facing the district is.
“Collaboration,” Ebert said. “Trust in the Clark County School district. Are we doing what’s right? Are we being financially responsible with the few dollars that we have?”
Ebert says transparency is a big area of focus.
“Hold us accountable,” she said. “I do not shine away from accountability.”
FOX5 asked how CCSD will be more open with the community.
Among Ebert’s answers, she plans to make herself more visible, wants to provide accurate information to the media, and showcase what’s going right in the district.
“Do we need to do better in some areas? Absolutely. But, there are components of who we are, and what we do that we need to lift up,” she said.
According to data from the Nevada Department of Education, 19% of high school students and 36% of elementary school students scored proficiently in math in CCSD for the 2023-2024 school year.
When FOX5 asked how Ebert plans to improve those scores, she pointed to student attendance and making sure schools are fully staffed.
Around the same time last year, the Clark County School District had 1,034 classroom vacancies posted on its talent acquisition website. Last week, the district reported only 280.
“The retention rate is much higher than it’s been in past years. I know that one of the reasons is the compensation,” Ebert explained.
She said she expects these low vacancy rates to have a positive impact on students.
“When the students see, and have a teacher that is showing up every single day, the kids are going to show up every single day,” Ebert said.
And, when it comes to student safety, Ebert said traffic safety is top of mind.
CCSD plans to host an event on Aug. 30 with Clark County to discuss roads around the district’s schools.
