9,300 people are now being allowed to return, but 5,000 remain under an evacuation order.
Police say they are still working to determine who started the fire and are evaluating community tips to determine whether it was accidental or purposeful.
Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue says 47 homes were destroyed in the fire, as was 1 commercial structure. Meanwhile, 8 homes were damaged.
Fire officials say most of the homes that were lost were along the west side of US395, but that some of the destroyed homes were on the east side of the fire.
No fatalities have been reported as of Tuesday.

Fire crews continued making progress Tuesday on the Hawk Fire, leading officials to downgrade some evacuation orders and prepare to reopen key roadways even as containment remains at 27%.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office downgraded evacuations off Village Parkway in the White Lake area from “Evacuate Now” (red) to “Get Set” (yellow) status.
Additionally, the road closure at North Virginia Street and Village Parkway is scheduled to be lifted.
Despite these positive developments, officials warn that the danger is far from over.
Extreme fire behavior and damage assessments
The Hawk Fire, which grew rapidly after igniting, remains sized at just over 15,000 acres. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada reported that the wildfire exhibited “extreme behavior” during its first day, tearing through six miles of terrain and moving approximately four miles in a single three-hour window.
The rapid spread of the fire has already impacted critical infrastructure, including a railway line and a communication tower.
As containment efforts continue, damage assessment teams are on the ground. Officials stated that while they are currently verifying the extent of the destruction, the number of destroyed or damaged structures is expected to rise as assessments are finalized.

- Silver Lake Road at Stead (near McDonald’s)
- North Virginia Street at Panther Drive, East Golden Valley Road, Lemmon Drive, Stead Boulevard (northbound and southbound), Red Rock Road, and White Lake Parkway
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, monitor local emergency alerts, and stay prepared to evacuate if wind conditions cause the fire to shift.
