LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — If kids break e-bike laws their parents could be on the hook for the fine, according to the Henderson Police Department.
With school back in session the department is spreading awareness about new e-bike rules.
Henderson police says e-bikes with pedals are allowed in city parks and roads. But e-bikes with foot pegs that can travel more than 50 miles per hour are not.
Officials say these unauthorized e-bikes are treated like a normal motorcycle. And officers will issue citations accordingly with fines from $150 to $600 dollars.
Those fines can be stacked on top of each other.
This PSA from the department comes after it released “alarming statistics” about e-bike crashes.
Between the start of the year and mid-June, Henderson police responded to 23 crashes involving e-bikes.
During that same time nearly 30-percent of all vehicles versus bike crashes involved an e-bike.
And– since 2024, the department investigated two fatal e-bike crashes.
“So I think it’s important for parents to know as well that Nevada state law there is a statute,” said Sgt. Richard Paul. “It’s associated with parents being held liable, parents and guardians who knowingly allow their children to operate unauthorized e-bikes on roadways could be subject to fines as well.”
FOX5 asked HPD, how many e-bike related citations they’ve issued? But we haven’t heard back.
Sgt. Paul said he called parents to a city park to pick up their child and e-bike. After their child was caught riding illegally.
We’ve also asked county officials about citations since its new ordinance was implemented in the spring, but we have not heard back.
