LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The airport connector is a key road to get around Harry Reid International Airport, but some are concerned the lights around the tunnel can impact drivers and passengers alike.
“The airport connector opened 31 years ago and was a game changer for those who live on the south side of the airport,” said Erin Breen, director of the road equity alliance at UNLV. “But over the last 30 years, wear and tear has taken its toll on the aging tunnel. Then there’s the pulsing lights that can be quite distracting to drivers. As the traffic safety person, my fear it’s going to trigger an epileptic seizure in someone who has epilepsy.”
FOX5’s Cone Zone did a check, and it appears that no crashes have been reported due to the pulsing light issue.
The Department of Aviation sent a statement regarding the issue:
The tunnel has caused gripe from commuters.
“It seems like the lights are on on one side of the tunnel and off on the other side of the tunnel regularly,” one driver said.
A tunnel lighting upgrade project was recently completed by the Department of Aviation including adding new LED lighting, but the tunnel has long been plagued with issues.
Drivers have been dealing with potholes, poor lane markings and even water in the tunnels for many years making for a very bumpy, soggy ride for drivers.
The Department of Aviation oversees the airport connector and told the FOX5 Cone Zone team that plans are in the works for a full tunnel repaving project.
Now, if you see a pothole or other road maintenance issues on airport property, you can reach out directly to the airport on their contact page.
