LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A traffic stop on Interstate 15 led to a drug trafficking bust, according to the Mesquite Police Department.
According to a release from the Mesquite Police Department, the bust occurred on Interstate 15 near mile marker 121 on Aug. 12. A vehicle was seen driving erratically and below the speed limit, police said.
Police found the driver, identified as Fredys Ortega Perez, 30, of Big Lake, Minnesota, driving without a valid license or proof of vehicle registration. K-9 officer Rogue detected illegal narcotics, and a large duffel bag containing 60 vacuum-sealed packages of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine was found, investigators said.
Police determined that the street value of the 68 pounds of drugs would be approximately $400,000. The packages also contained coffee grounds, police said, adding that the practice is commonly used by traffickers to mask the odor of narcotics.
Perez was arrested and faces one count of trafficking a controlled substance in excess of 400 grams. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.
