LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The City of Henderson is reimagining Boulder Highway.
A major multimillion-dollar road improvement project is underway within city limits to modernize the historic highway that once helped get workers from Downtown Las Vegas to construct the Hoover Dam.
The city says the goal is much more than improving road safety, it is about bringing life businesses and homes back to the corridor. A major commercial project just moved forward Wednesday evening.
“One of the biggest things residents are asking us to do is bring more eating opportunities into the area. There is just a limited number of those opportunities now,” Lee Farris, President of the LandWell Company told FOX5.
The company behind the massive Cadence development that borders Boulder Highway now wants to develop 14 acres of open land into six restaurants, a convenience store, gas station, tavern, auto shop, tire shop, car wash, and “commercial subdivision” for other businesses. The Henderson Planning Commission approved the Boulder Plaza proposal Wednesday evening. It could get final approval from the Henderson City Council next month.
“The Cadence Master Planning Community is one of the fastest growing master planning communities in the country… It will be close to 13,000 new homes,” explained Anthony Molloy, Redevelopment Agency Director for the City of Henderson.
Molloy shared vacant storefronts along the historic highway have kept people away for years, but with the massive redevelopment project transforming the road the corridor is getting a new life and more new residents.
“Right now, in the 7.1 mile corridor that’s in the city of Henderson, we already have almost 3,000 residential units that have been approved and they’re at various stages of construction or predesign,” Molloy revealed.
With the new pedestrian-friendly road and many more people living around it, businesses are taking notice.
“In the last 12 months, all along the corridor, we have worked with numerous businesses to see more and more openings. We’ve actually seen 41 new businesses open in the Boulder Highway corridor and 23 of those are in the redevelopment areas, creating 135 new jobs – that’s a really important thing for us,” Molloy contended.
Reimagine Boulder Highway construction began one year ago this month and will continue for about two more years.
The city says investing millions of dollars to improve the roadway and attract new businesses has a massive potential economic impact well into the future.
