LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Sometimes, unexpected packages contain nice surprises, but other times, they may have a scam hiding inside, or even outside. Here’s what to look out for:

You’ll get a box with no return address or sender information, but it will have a QR code printed on the outside. Inside, you’ll find an item with little or no value, and no explanation of where it came from. If you scan the code, it’ll take you to a fake website where cybercriminals will ask you to enter your personal information. That opens you up to identity theft. The site may also infect your device with malware.

To avoid falling for this scam, be suspicious of any package you receive but didn’t order, especially if it lacks sender information. Never scan a QR code from an unfamiliar or untrusted source. They often lead to malicious websites. Be careful about allowing websites and apps access to your phone’s data after scanning a code. That’s how bad actors steal your identity and infect your devices.
