LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The latest COVID-19 vaccine for the fall season is coming to Nevada, but access is limited as pharmacies wait for more federal approval per state law.
Last Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration ended the “emergency use authorization” for COVID-19 vaccines.
The FDA also restricted the eligibility for the fall shots: only people 65 and older and those with conditions making them high risk for COVID-19 complications can get the updated vaccine.
For pharmacies to offer the latest vaccines, Nevada requires approval by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or “ACIP” panel. The committee is set to meet in two weeks.
CVS and Walgreens both announced that the latest vaccine rollout has been halted in Nevada pharmacies. However, CVS Minute Clinics will offer vaccines as soon as Wednesday.
A provider at the Minute Clinic can write a prescription for the vaccine, according to Dr. Christina Madison of The Public Health Pharmacist.
“Right now, the COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for everyone 65 years and up and for only those who have at least one risk factor for COVID-19 severe infection. Just being either overweight or obese is a risk factor for having severe complications with COVID-19. Having asthma. Having an immunocompromising condition like, you know having cancer or being pregnant,” Dr. Madison said.
What if you want a vaccine for yourself or your child, or have concerns about a loved one who is high risk? Dr. Madison advises you to consult your provider.
“Having your vaccination status up to date is the simplest way that you can protect yourself during respiratory season,” Dr. Madison said. “We are still regularly seeing people being admitted with COVID-19 to our hospitals and there are still people who are dying from this infection,” she said.
For some time, COVID-19 vaccines have been available to children and people six months and older.
The Southern Nevada Health District still offers the current COVID-19 vaccine by appointment only. The latest and updated vaccine won’t arrive at SNHD clinics until October, a spokesperson tells FOX5.
