LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Clark County School District responded to a report showing test scores are down nationwide.
The Department of Education said test scores are down, ranging from middle school to high school. The National Assessment of Education Progress found high school seniors had the lowest scores in more than 20 years. Eighth-grade students saw a huge drop in science skills.
Educators say the scores can’t be blamed on COVID-19 alone. Closures and absenteeism were also issues. Experts believe increased screen time, a decline in long-form reading and shorter attention spans may be factors as well.
Linda McMahon, the U.S. education secretary, said there’s plenty of work to be done.
“If America is going to remain globally competitive, our children must be able to read proficiently by the third grade and graduate equipped to solve complex problems,” McMahon said. “We owe it to them to do better.”
CCSD responded to the claims by the Department of Education and the National Assessment of Education Progress.
“Districts around the country saw steep declines in test scores during and immediately after the pandemic,” the district said. “CCSD is proud of the progress we are making in catching up to pre-pandemic scores on our state assessments.”
