LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Dozens of NV Energy customers showed up to a consumer session and weighed in on the power company’s latest proposed rate change on the Deferred Energy Accounting Adjustment (DEAA).
“NVE seeks PUCN approval of its 2025 fuel and purchased power expenses and its proposed reset of rates to account for changes in costs related to renewable energy and energy efficiency programs,” a press release from the PUCN stated.

The Consumer Session on the DEAA was rescheduled from late June after dozens of customers showed up to voice concerns about daily demand charge, which the PUCN has already approved for a January 1 rollout. There are no further hearings scheduled on the Daily Demand issue, according to the PUCN and NV Energy.
According to statements from NV Energy, the rates are tied to the costs incurred by NV Energy in 2025 “to purchase electricity and fuel used to provide service to customers,” a Q & A sheet from NV Energy said, with “no markup and no profit” to the utility company.
“We do this every year. It’s an annual adjustment. NV Energy comes to the PUCN and essentially lays out the costs of delivering energy across Nevada,” said Justin Hopkins with NV Energy.
Documents from NV Energy state that the average residential customer would see an increase of $0.73 a month; the “average retail price for residential customers was about 62 percent lower than California, and 28% lower than the U.S. average,” figures state.
Customers voiced concerns over the need for a rate change, and ask for scrutiny of costs incurred to NV Energy in 2025. The PUCN posted documents online.
“The way I see it, this isn’t economics. This is theft,“ said customer Chris Noll, noting the multi-billion-dollar revenue from the utility company. ”You come asking for an increase, you’ve never come and asked for a decrease,” he said.
“Every rate increase on the commercial side squeezes my business, while incurring increases to my household residential rate further stress my family’s disposable income. I ask the commission to thoroughly scrutinize NV Energy’s fuel and purchase power expenses for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2025,” said business owner Elizabeth Casper.
Others came to voice concerns with the Daily Demand charge. Some also called for further review of the charge before implementation.
“[NV Energy] told me that there’s going to be a tool, a real-time tool to see our consumption so that we can combat the daily demand charge. If NV Energy is promising something, I’d really like them to get to it,” one consumer said, asking for further information.
Hopkins said more tools would roll out in following weeks; information is part of NV Energy’s effort to combat the “misconception” that the charge automatically increases your bill.
“In the coming weeks, we’re going to be rolling out a web tool where you’ll be able to log into your account. You’ll be able to see your personalized bill, where you use the most demand,” Hopkins said.
The PUCN will hold a hearing on August 24; the commission will consider NV Energy’s application by late September or early October, officials said.
