LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Brightline needs 11,000 workers to build the high-speed rail from Las Vegas to Southern California, and FOX5 explored what positions are needed and how workers will be recruited.

“We’ve been getting a lot of interest. We’ve been getting calls from all over the country,” said Vince Saavedra, executive secretary-treasurer of the Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions.
Three thousand construction and trade workers will be hired within Southern Nevada. According to Saavedra, they’ll be responsible for the roughly 50-mile portion of the project from Las Vegas Boulevard at Warm Springs all the way to the California border.

Plenty of different kinds of journeymen are needed, including ironworkers, operators, bricklayers, electricians, cement finishers and sheet metal workers, among many others. Now that many large projects across the Valley have wrapped up, from the Sphere, Fontainebleau, Durango Resort and Formula One, hundreds of unemployed union workers will be first in line for those open positions.
Some brand-new apprentices can work on the Brightline project.
FOX5 was there as the union gave a tour to Clark County officials about hiring strategies at Sheet Metal Workers Local 88.
“They might work as a pre-apprentice, be able to get a job with one of the contractors that is working on the Brightline project. It just doesn’t stop there: that’s why it’s pretty important. They will have an opportunity to carry on a career,” said Kenneth Bosket, who instructs apprentices.
