LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas has seen a loss of thousands of jobs, according to a new state report.
According to the latest jobs report from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), the state’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 5.3 percent. Nevada’s labor force declined by 1,303, while the total number of nonfarm jobs fell by 3,800 in August compared with July.
The total number of nonfarm jobs in the state as a whole did not change, DETR data show.
The report said Las Vegas employment decreased by 4,300 jobs, with a drop of 5,000 jobs compared with August 2024.
“The August report shows a labor market that is largely stationary,” said David Schmidt, chief economist for DETR. “Private-sector employment fell by 6,000 jobs over the month, led by statistically significant declines in the construction and accommodation and food services industries.”
Schmidt said the organization had not received a surge in new claims from the construction, accommodation and food services industries, where he noted statistically significant declines had been seen, indicating an ongoing demand for workers.
