LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A police report detailed the arrest of Oh’Ryan Brooks, 27, the man accused of driving while impaired, hitting and killing Cristofer Suarez, 12, while he was walking to school.

The crash happened just after 7:30 a.m. on Friday near the intersection of Eastern and Owens avenues, according to the report.

Surveillance cameras at Rancho High School captured the crash, the report said. A white SUV hit the boy, later identified as Suarez, before leaving the scene. Suarez was thrown into a wrought iron fence, and the collision occurred within a crosswalk that had yellow flashing lights activated.

The suspect, Brooks, was tracked through his license plate number. Surveillance video from the apartment showed Brooks twice inspecting the damage done to his vehicle, the report said.

When officers made the arrest, just after 9:30 a.m., police said he failed a sobriety test, an arrest report indicated. Police said Brooks admitted to his involvement in the crash, and that he smoked marijuana while getting his kids ready for school between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.

According to the arrest report, he told officers he smoked more marijuana after the crash, ”because he knew he was going to jail.” He had dropped off two of his eight children at school just before the crash and was headed home to pick up the others. Brooks told officials the sun was in his eyes at the time of the crash.

Before Cristofer’s death, Brooks faced one count of failing to stop at the scene of a crash, DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, and reckless driving — all felonies.

Brooks is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
