LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Clark County School District is hosting its annual “Walk and Roll to School Day” event on Wednesday alongside schools across the country.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., students across the school district participated in a parade walk to school to highlight the importance of road safety in an effort to drive the point home.
The national event promotes safety as kids walk, bike, and roll their way to school.
“You never know what can happen in the blink of an eye,” Jahsiah Lau, a 5th grader at Rose Warren Elementary, told FOX5 Wednesday. “You could always get hit because of a driver going too fast.”
Students are being taught the role they play in staying safe while getting to and from school.
“The kids are taught how to use crosswalks properly,” CCSD Police Lt. Bryan Zink explained. “It is easy to just cut across the street mid-intersection, but we all know that’s not safe because most drivers aren’t paying attention to that.”
4th grader Keniyah Thompson proudly shared what she learned.
“Stopping at a corner, waving at the driver to make sure they pay attention to you, and stay in the sidewalk and then look both ways,” she recited.
Unfortunately, kids in the valley have to prepare for drivers who don’t follow the rules.
“The main thing we really want to stress to the kids is – just because you have the right of way doesn’t mean you’re always going to be given the right of way,” Zink said.
Officials said the community is encouraged to report road safety concerns regarding crosswalks, crossing guards, traffic signs, and safety lights to the appropriate city officials for the area of concern.
