LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — One year ago, 2:30 a.m. on October 9, 2024, Las Vegas said goodbye to one of the original Strip hotels. The Tropicana was imploded in spectacular fashion. The explosives accompanied by a drone show as thousands watched on. Saying goodbye to the Trop was a big step in saying hello to Athletics Baseball. The team’s stadium is now being built on the site.

Wednesday, plans took another big step forward. The Clark County Zoning Commission unanimously approved their development agreement with the Athletics to officially bring the team to the Strip. The agreement is legally-binding between the county and the baseball club. The agreement also outlines height restrictions since the stadium will be near Harry Reid Airport. The stadium, estimated to cost about $2 billion, is on track to welcome fans in 2028.

“If a team wants to come here, I’m appreciative of it,” shared Summerlin resident John Fields who runs the “Vegas A’s Fan” account on X. He’s a lifelong baseball fan originally from Southern California.

“It’s interesting that there are people that say that Vegas is a Dodger town, and if you’re a Dodger fan, you can’t be an A’s fan and I’ve always commented, it’s not like a religion where you can only pick one… Right now, frankly, the A’s are more fun to watch. They’re a young group, highly enthusiastic… and they’re only going to be getting better when they get to Vegas,” Fields contended. Fields has been on board with the A’s move to Vegas from the beginning.

“Those of us that followed the facts knew that the funding was there. We had every reason to believe that the team was seriously intent on moving here. We’ve also, several of us, have gone to watch parties and have gotten to know fairly well some of the team officials and some of them have already started moving here,” Fields revealed. He’s already planning on how to get the best tickets in the stadium.

“A number of us knew that Aviator season ticket holders would be among the priority group for the stadium… several of us are now Aviator season ticket holders just for the purpose of getting into that priority,” Fields explained.

This week, select A’s fans were sent a survey asking about ticketing for the 2028 season. Fields says he’s already filled it out to let the team know his preferences.
