LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is utilizing a unique avenue to attract recruits. They are working with the next class of police officers.

The event took place on Wednesday at Cascao Jiu-Jitsu. LVMPD partnered with the local gym to bring in people interested in becoming officers, allowing the Metro police to connect with those interested in an informative and interactive way.

As for the current recruits, the exercise prepares them for the police academy, where they head in November.

“We’re trying to expose new recruits to stuff that they’re going to see in the academy,” said Sgt. John Deschutter with the Las Vegas Metro Police Recruiting Section. “A lot of our defensive tactics, pools from various martial arts, be it boxing, jiu-jitsu, also different things like CrossFit and boot camps, are going to get you prepared for the academy.”

Metro police says events like this also help recruits interact with the community that they’ll soon be protecting.
