LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A major road in the Las Vegas Valley is being reduced to one lane until next month.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, Sunset Road is being reduced to one lane overnight as part of an ongoing paving rehabilitation project. Officials say the work will improve nearly three miles of pavement between Las Vegas Boulevard and Annie Oakley Drive.

The purpose of the project, officials say, is to enhance safety and extend the life of the roadways.

NDOT said the $12.9 million federally-funded project includes milling and paving Sunset Road as well as lowering utilities, removing and replacing median islands, and upgrading striping and electrical items.

NDOT says Sunday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., until Nov. 7, Sunset Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction betwen Las Vegas Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. Left turn lanes are to be closed intermittently.

NDOT says vehicles wider than 12 feet should consider alternate routes.

During the daytime, NDOT says multiple lanes will remain open for heavy traffic.

“Motorists should use caution while traveling through work zones, and take alternate detour routes, if possible,” officials say. “NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors.”
