New crosswalk project to connect Chinatown Plaza with Shanghai Plaza

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Chinatown Plaza and the establishment of Chinatown have been around for about 30 years, first opening up in 1995. But little has changed with Spring Mountain Road.

It’s a busy commuter route, with narrow sidewalks, and it’s pretty treacherous for pedestrians to cross between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza directly across the street, but that’s all about the change.

“Doing this type of improvement is good for business. You know, if more people have easy access to where they want to go, they’re more inclined to go,” said Erin Breen, director of Ped Safe Vegas.

The improvement is a new crosswalk project that kicked off last week. The new crosswalk will directly connect Chinatown Plaza with Shanghai Plaza.

The upgrades will include overhead rapid flashing yellow beacon lighting that’s activated by pedestrians wanting to safely cross busy Spring Mountain Road. Those flashing yellow beacon lights have already saved lives on other valley roadways.

“You know the most deadly intersection in all of Nevada for several years was Sun Valley and Boulder Highway. It’s where the first new pedestrian flashers went. There’s been no one killed in that intersection since that improvement was made,” Breen said.

The rapid flashing yellow pedestrian lights were installed on Boulder Highway near the Eastside Cannery back in 2017, making that section of Boulder Highway much safer. Now, the new Chinatown Crosswalk project along Spring Mountain Road between Arville and Wynn Road is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
