LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The United States faces the loss of its measles elimination status if outbreaks in South Carolina, Arizona and Utah are not contained by January, according to a report from the Nevada Hospital Association.
The warning comes as Canada officially lost its measles elimination status following 12 consecutive months of continuous viral transmission. More than 5,000 cases and two infant deaths have been reported in Canada in 2025, Pan American Health Organization officials said.
Officials reported 150 cases of measles along the Arizona-Utah border since mid-August.
Canada can regain elimination status by interrupting transmission of the current outbreak strain for at least 12 consecutive months, the report said.
