LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Venetian Resort has partnered with the Just One Project to rescue surplus food and distribute it to families across Southern Nevada through a network of community organizations.
Anna Schmid, VP of Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility at the Venetian Resort, said the resort can save almost everything from its food operations.
Food rescue program expands reach
The Venetian piloted the Food Rescue Alliance, where the resort takes surplus food, repackages it and distributes it to their community partner, the Just One Project.
“We did it for many years on our own, where we were just trying to put the pieces together ourselves between major shows coming and going,” Schmid said.
Once the food arrives at the Just One Project kitchen, it’s quickly unpacked, sorted and then re-packed to be sent out to community partners.
Brooke Neubauer, CEO and founder of the Just One Project, said the organization shares all of the Food Rescue Alliance food with 30 other nonprofit partners and Southern Nevada families that they serve directly.
“The Just One Project shares all of the Food Rescue Alliance food with 30 other nonprofit partners and Southern Nevada families that we serve ourselves,” Neubauer said.
Volunteers deliver meals within hours
Through a network of volunteers, the organization gets meals out to families within hours of arrival. Volunteers like Larraine Leisure, a senior herself, she spends most of her week inside the Just One Project kitchen providing and delivering meals to disabled seniors in her community.
“It really touches my heart, because so many people are appreciative, and especially right now, they would go without,” Leisure said.
The Venetian said through this partnership, they are on track to reach 1 million meals donated by early next year.
