LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Since 2020, more than 500 first responders nationwide have been killed while helping others on the side of the road.

Here in Nevada, local first responders are shining a spotlight on safety. This week marks Crash Responder Safety Week.

Monday, responders gave a tour of their crash center, showing how they work to keep Nevada’s roads safe. Their message hits close to home, especially after the deadly I-11 road rage shooting.

“Just this past Saturday, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Engine 9 was struck on I-11 while blocking and checking for injuries of a traffic accident,” an official said. “These aren’t just statistics. These are members of our community, mothers, fathers, friends, and co-workers. When drivers speed past an emergency scene or choose not to give space, it puts every responder at risk.”

Officials say when you see those emergency lights, just slow down and move over.
