LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Law enforcement agencies and school officials staged a pedestrian safety demonstration at Cashman Middle School, using a large turkey mascot in a crosswalk to dramatize the dangers drivers pose to pedestrians.

Officers from the Clark County School District (CCSD) police, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Henderson Police Department, North Las Vegas Police Department, and UNLV Police Department collaborated on the event to enforce right-of-way laws and remind drivers to slow down, particularly during the busy holiday season.

According to police, the demonstration led to several near misses as drivers failed to yield while the turkey crossed in a marked crosswalk. The demonstration was designed to be a visible reminder that pedestrians — and especially children — are vulnerable in school zones and crosswalks.

Officials said the enforcement effort produced the following results:

  • 145 traffic stops
  • 109 citations for failing to yield to pedestrians
  • 1 vehicle towed

Officials report the local toll of pedestrian crashes: so far this year, seven children have been killed while walking on area roads, 71 pedestrian have lost their lives in Clark County, and since the first day of school, over 190 students have been struck on their way to and from school.

Organizers report the demonstration served as a reminder about basic safety measures for drivers and families:

  • Slow down in school zones and residential areas.
  • Always stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, especially near schools and bus stops.
  • Teach children to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
